    Rubber nanocomposite is a field of extensive research in recent years. This is a class of hybrid materials, where the reinforcing component is uniformly distributed in nanometer scale within the rubber matrix. The reinforcing materials are mostly nanoclay, silica, expanded graphite, graphene, carbon nanotubes, nanofibers, etc. The present lecture will highlight the reinforcing aspects of these nanofillers. In particular, filler morphology, physical and chemical interaction, properties of the unvulcanized rubber, mechanical behaviour at small and large deformations, extensive study of failure properties and mechanism of reinforcement would be discussed. For example, the unmodified and modified clays have been shown to improve the mechanical properties several folds, and swelling resistance significantly for many rubbers. The results have been explained with the help of morphology, interaction between the components, adsorption phenomena, surface and cleavage energy balance and thermodynamics. Graphene and silica with suitable modification are found to be good reinforcing agents for rubbers. Tribological characteristics of a few rubber nanocomposites, performed by analyzing the abrasion resistance, debris and abraded surface, revealed that nanofillers arrested wear significantly. The mechanical, dynamic mechanical and tribological properties of ternary nanocomposites comprising of rubber /nanofiller/carbon black exhibited synergistic improvements, within the high performance window of good wet skid and rolling resistance. On the basis of these observations, a mechanism for reinforcement of rubber by nanoparticles has been proposed.
