  • In recent decades, economic and environmental factors have shifted industrial focus from landfill or thermal utilization of end-of-life tires to instead recovering the material in the form of ground tire rubber (GTR) for reuse in various applications. However, the processability of GTR and its challenges in material performance narrow its applicability. The TOR material has proven itself to be a viable solution to address both problems.[1,2] TOR forms a dispersed phase in rubber polymer systems, wetting their surfaces, preventing coalescence and facilitating the mixing of normally immiscible rubbers. We use the insights obtained from MD to understand TOR’s interaction with the curing chemicals, as well as in blends with natural and synthetic rubber. These insights give new impulses in mastering efficient co-vulcanization of the different rubbers to obtain improved properties. Additionally, trans-polyoctenamer has been found to contain a high percentage of cyclic polymer chains.[3] We also assess properties of macrocyclic TOR systems by atomistic simulations and develop a first understanding of which properties are influenced by the macrocycles.
