Multi-purpose Products: Additives for Rubber Compounds that can Provide More than One Function

  • The number of additives to improve processability and produce the required physical properties of rubber compounds is vast: processing aids, accelerators, activators, cross linkers, reinforcing agents, antidegradants, stabilizers, etc., the list is long. Typically an additive serves just a particular purpose, but in some cases, the additive can be used for more than one benefit. This can be a significant positive, since it may reduce the number of additives required to produce the desired compound while improving the overall quality. Cost, complexity and other aspects typically associated with compound production and performance can all benefit by the use of multipurpose additives. This presentation will focus on several products produced by Lanxess business unit Rhein Chemie that serve more than one purpose. Specifically, anti-reversion agents Perkalink 900® and Vulcuren® will be shown to also be effective components of curing systems. Dithiophosphates which are ultra-accelerators that do not produce harmful nitrosamines, will be shown to be effective in reducing compound reversion. A specific dithiophosphate, Rhenogran ZDT®-50 can also be used as a cure retarder. Rhenogran® Geniplex-70 is a curing activator primarily for sponge compounds and also a blowing agent which will generate cellular structures. Performance of each product’s multiple functions will be demonstrated and discussed. The history of anti-reversion agents and co-curing will be discussed.
