  • For over 80 years, 2D transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has enabled connections between carbon black morphology and application properties. In the last few decades, electron tomography-based 3D aggregate reconstructions have revealed aggregate mass distribution, but carbon black’s polydispersity, the time required for 3D modeling, and the ambiguous aggregate surfaces generated in reconstruction have prevented accurate, statistically significant 3D characterization. After a review of key developments in 2D and 3D analysis of carbon black morphology, the requirements for methods to quickly generate statistically accurate 3D carbon black aggregate mass distributions (and therefore structure, surface area, occlusion capacity, anisometry, etc. properties) are explained. The expected bearing of these datasets / models on our understanding of phenomena such as reinforcement, hysteresis, conductivity, and permeability are discussed.
