  • Machine learning (ML) has become a widely-used tool across chemistry and materials science. In many applications, a simple ML approach that treats candidate materials as mixtures of a few pure constituents (e.g., H2O is two-thirds hydrogen and one-third oxygen) works surprisingly well in producing accurate predictions of material properties. However, the unique demands of formulation development complicate this situation, as constituent ingredients are no longer pure. We will discuss the challenges of applying ML to formulation development, and provide examples of ML capabilities tailored to formulations.
