A New Way of Thinking about the Fillers Role in Natural Rubber: Improving Hysteresis Through Filler Modifications and Smart Compounding

  • There have been several attempts to improve hysteresis in carbon black-filled compounds by way of implementing a coupling agent, which increases the interaction between the carbon black and polymer. Such attempts, however, have had very limited success. This paper theorizes that interactions between the carbon black and polymer can be improved by using a specific, chemically modified carbon black, which can then be mixed with the proper curing agents during the mixinglvulcanization steps to produce an overall superior rubber compound. This paper will also characterize the modified carbon black and propose mechanisms for the ways in which the filler participates in the mixing and vulcanization steps. It will also be shown how the choice of curing packages is critical in producing the desired performance parameters. This new method of filler modification with smart compounding may lead to a new performance standard in rubber compounds including natural rubber where silica has limited success in improving properties.
